This two bedroom, two bathroom apartment is nestled on the Rue Charlot, a tiny one way street off of the rue de Bretagne in the Marais. The apartment is on the second floor (up two flights of stairs) in a historic building which is a former “hotel particulier” with a gorgeous cobblestone courtyard and a grand entryway.

We lovingly and comprehensively renovated this residence in 2010-11 restoring herringbone oak floors and an original stained glass window while opening up the space to take advantage of double exposure in the living room, seamlessly integrating a stunning designer kitchen, adding new jewel-box bathrooms, and installing central heating and air- conditioning. The luxury furnishings complete this sophisticated pied-a-terre.

Kitchen and Living Room

The bright and airy living space is the heart of the apartment. The spacious room is flooded with light which reflects off of the herringbone oak floors. The state of the art designer kitchen features top-end appliances and a sleek white Corian countertop with grey lacquer cabinets. The island merges into a solid oak table (at table height) which seats 4-6 people for dinner. We conceived the kitchen as a casual and convivial space so we also integrated plugs into the tabletop so it can also be used as a workspace.

The sitting area blends modern design with the comfort and elegance of the French salon. Louis XVI chairs are beautifully upholstered in Paul Smith stripes and positioned opposite a sleek sofa for conversation. A sumptuous armchair is positioned with a view of the historic mansion across the street for reading or contemplation. Powder blue taffeta curtains pair with a modern take on the chandelier to complete the marriage of traditional elegance with modern design. The sofa converts into a queen-sized bed with a thick mattress to sleep an occasional guest or children.

The entertainment center includes a sound dock for your ipod, a multizone dvd and a flat screen TV. There is cable table television with some English news channels. Wifi internet is enabled throughout the apartment.

Master Bedroom and En-Suite Bath

Bedroom one features an original stained glass window that has been lovingly restored. It is decorated in chocolate and coral tones and features an American King size (180) bed, (that can be separated and made up as two twin beds) with hotel quality linens. There is also a built-in hanging closet. The en-suite bathroom is clean and minimalist in beige tile with a toilet, sink, mirrored medicine cabinet and large tub with wall-mounted shower attachment and glass shower screen.

Second Bedroom

You reach bedroom two from a long hallway which gives it an especially private feel. The cozy bedroom is romantically furnished in beige and bordeaux tones with premium linens. It has a large window overlooking the picturesque courtyard of the historic mansion across the street. There is also a roomy closet.

Shower Room and Separate Toilet

The adjoining shower room is a veritable jewel-box with amethyst glass tiles. It has a spacious glass shower cabin, power showerhead and small sink with vanity mirror. The powder room is conveniently located across the hall from the shower room.

The two bedrooms are located at opposite ends of the apartment-an ideal layout for couples traveling together as well as families.

  1. We stayed in the 2-bedroom Marais Charlot apartment for a week last summer with our two daughters. It was almost the highlight of our European vacation. The accommodations were incredible. Rustic in charm but had all of the modern amenities that we have come to expect. The kitchen is beautiful and modern. A large fridge, Nespresso coffee maker and full-sized dishwasher. The best part was the washer AND dryer which is very rare anywhere in Europe. There was WiFi and free phone calls to North America. The beds were super comfortable (memory foam?) and the linens were all of high quality. I understand that the owners are American so really know how to cater to the American client! Management were incredibly responsive prior to our arrival. Almost instantaneous email replies with very helpful local recommendations and any other questions that we had. There was a young woman named Lee who met us upon check-in and departure who was also really helpful. They arranged for a taxi pick-up to and from the train station. “Taxi Robert” was hilarious and helpful. Really can’t say enough about what a great experience this rental was. Top notch! We’ve already recommended this rental company to a couple of friends.

Au revoir Marais Charlot…until next time.

  5. What a wonderful time our family of eight enjoyed in Marais Charlot and Haut Marais – making memories! The accommodations met and exceeded our needs and Ms. Brisk made sure we were comfortable in both units. We would recommend either apartment and can only hope a return trip is in our future. Sophie was a delight, introducing us to our apartments and with dining recommendations. The introduction to “Taxi Robert” was most helpful, not only in transporting us from CDG to the apartments but also assisting in picking up our vehicle for the second week of our trip and literally leading us out of the city! Above and beyond our expectations!
